Ubud Hotels Association - UPDATED NEWS
A Literary Love Affair in Bali Continues Named by Condé Nast Traveler as “one of the world’s great book events”, Ubud Writers & Readers Festival, held in the tropical mountains of Bali, is now universally regarded as one of most exciting annual celebrations of the written word. The theme of this year’s Festival, on from 25 to 30 September, Sekala-Niskala (The Seen and The Unseen) invites participants to look beyond the word and, quite literally, read between the lines. With 80 writers from more than 25 countries, this year’s event promises to outdo even the highest expectation - six days of inspiring discussions, creative workshops, book launches, literary lunches, poetry readings and a free children’s educational program. Special guests include: the winner of the 2006 Man Booker Prize, Kiran Desai; award-winning Australian author of The Sound of One Hand Clapping and Death of a River Guide, Richard Flanagan; and the former UN diplomat and author, Shashi Tharoor. In 2007, text jumps from the page to the stage with vibrant performances in dance, theatre and film. From Australia, the theatre production A Terrible Beauty, written by Ray Harding and directed by Bill Blaikie, offers a revealing insight into the aftermath of the Bali bombings. Stretching its boundaries to include events outside of the usual six-day period, the Festival will also present an exciting series of exclusive dinners and travel writing seminars throughout the year. From 1-5 October, acclaimed Australian writing teacher, Patti Miller, will hold a 5-day Writing Retreat, showing beginning and experienced writers how to transform the world of senses into words amidst the stunning surrounds of Ubud.Since its founding, the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival has been leading the charge to ensure the intellectual and literary currents existing in contemporary Indonesia have a forum to be voiced and heard. At the same time, the Festival seeks to dispel cultural stereotypes by bringing Asian writers and thinkers into direct contact with their Western counterparts. Described as a “magical and mystical mix of East and West”, we hope that this year’s Festival will leave guests and participants with a deeper appreciation of ideas which, at first, seem to separate us, but in fact connect us. ![]() Festival Director Janet de Neefe and selected writers are available for immediate interview.
